SHINING 3D Capsule 3D Printer for Permanent Dental Restorations

Written by SHINING 3D DENTAL | Oct 9, 2026, 9:54:47 AM

Dental restorations have required multiple visits for many years. Patients leave with a temporary crown, wait days for lab fabrication, and return for a second appointment. While digital dentistry has improved the workflow, a same-day chairside restoration is not common.

The challenge lies in the difficulty of printing high-viscosity ceramic materials, the kind needed for permanent restorations. Most common dental 3D resin printers are designed for temporary restorations. That's where SHINING 3D Ceramix-Nano comes in.

SHINING 3D Ceramix-Nano is a capsule 3D printer built specifically for chairside 3D printing. It connects scanning, design, printing, curing, and delivery in just 30 mins. Read on for more details.

What is the SHINING 3D Capsule 3D Printer?

SHINING 3D Dental Ceramix-Nano is a chairside capsule 3D printer that integrates printing and curing functions into one device, printing permanent ceramic restorations in about 15 mins.

Here, "capsule" means that the printing material is pre-packaged and pre-measured in a capsule. You insert the capsule, scan its QR code, and the machine will automatically mix the resin and begin printing.

It weighs 2 kg and measures 87 × 131 × 276 mm, making it compact enough to sit on a desk or be carried on the go. Generally, crown printing needs 8 to 11 minutes, and on-machine curing takes 3 minutes.

The system is built for a complete digital workflow, which only needs 30 mins:

  • Intraoral scanning

  • AI restoration design

  • Capsule printing+integrated curing

  • Permanent dental restoration delivery

Key Features of the SHINING 3D Ceramix-Nano

1. APS Technology

Adaptive Pneumatic Stereolithography (APS) is the main technology behind Ceramix-Nano’s short printing cycle.

Conventional bottom-up resin printers separate each cured layer from the film by lifting the build platform. With high-viscosity, ceramic-filled resin, this peeling action can create stress and increase the time required for each layer.

APS adds controlled pneumatic assistance during layer separation. When the Z-axis moves only a very short distance, precise air pressure is applied to gently separate the film from the printed part. This protects the integrity of the part and significantly improves printing speed.

2. Capsule Material System

Each Ceramix-Nano capsule contains a measured quantity of ceramic-filled resin. You install the capsule, scan its code, and start printing. One capsule can produce up to three crowns, while the built-in chamber can accommodate a bridge measuring up to 38 mm.

The printing material is LumiCera. It features:

  • 55% ceramic filler content

  • Five VITA shades: BL, A1, A2, B1, and C2

  • FDA Class II 510(k) cleared for permanent intraoral use

  • 200 MPa flexural strength

  • Fatigue testing at 800N for 10 million cycles

3. Integrated Printing and Curing

Ceramix-Nano combines printing and curing in one unit. After printing, the restoration can be placed in the curing drawer built into the base of the Ceramix-Nano.

The curing drawer can reach 80°C (176°F). Its curing cycle takes 3 minutes or less, with a curing wavelength of 360 to 385 nm.

This design reduces the equipment footprint and keeps the validated printing and curing stages together. The fabrication stage is approximately 15 minutes, and the complete scan-to-delivery workflow is under 30 minutes for a suitable case.

4. Optional Aesthetic Curing Module

If you want smooth and premium surface final restorations, there is an optional aesthetic curing module that provides an oxygen-free curing stage.

This process doesn’t need another curing device. The module connects to a nitrogen tank to enable nitrogen curing, thereby eliminating the oxygen inhibition on the surface.

5. Portable Power Bank Support

The Ceramix-Nano also supports portable power operation. It should be a 20V 5A 100W power bank (10,000 mAh), supporting approximately 5 complete printing and curing cycles.

This is a stunning feature, meaning you can take the printer on the go, support house-call treatments, or move it between different clinics.

What Can You Print with Capsule 3D Printers?

SHINING 3D Ceramix-Nano is designed for several permanent restoration types common in dental clinics. These include:

  • Crowns: The LumiCera material achieves a flexural strength of 200 MPa, making it suitable for both anterior and posterior teeth. A single crown can be printed in just 8 to 11 minutes.

  • Three-unit Bridges: The Ceramix-Nano supports bridges of up to three units, with a maximum length of 38 mm.

  • Inlays and Onlays: When direct fillings are insufficient for restoring damaged teeth but a full crown is not yet required, inlays and onlays are an appropriate choice. Chairside restoration shortens the time from preparation to final bonding.

  • Veneers: The five basic shades of LumiCera material can meet the aesthetic needs of different patients.

Digital Workflow with Capsule 3D Printers

SHINING Flow is Shining 3D's brand-new cloud-based design platform. The Ceramix-Nano capsule 3D printer is the final step in SHINING Flow, enabling a 30-minute workflow from scanning to delivery.

Step 1: Intraoral Scanning

The first step in the digital workflow is intraoral scanning to acquire oral data. The dentist performs a digital scan of the prepared tooth and the surrounding oral structures. Compared to traditional impressions, digital scanning enables faster data acquisition and streamlines case management.

SHINING 3D offers a wide range of handheld intraoral scanners, including:

  • Standard Intraoral Scanners: Aoralscan Elf, Aoralscan 3, Aoralscan 3 Wireless, Aoralscan L

  • IPG Intraoral Scanners: Aoralscan Elite Wireless, Aoralscan Elite

IPG (Intraoral Photogrammetry) intraoral scanners are specifically designed for All-on-X implant cases, effectively addressing the common issue of passive fit.

Step 2: AI Crown Design

After scanning, the data is sent to the SHINING Flow platform. The AI design tool can generate the restoration in 2 minutes, while the platform then handles the necessary support placement, nesting, orientation, and slicing for the printer. The supports are positioned to avoid the occlusal and proximal surfaces, which would otherwise affect accuracy.

Currently, the AI design capabilities cover single posterior crowns, anterior crowns, and bridges of up to three units.

Step 3: Capsule Printing + Curing

After design, dentists load the capsule into the printer. The printer automatically manages the material parameters and begins fabrication. After printing, the restoration moves through the integrated curing process.

This eliminates several manual steps commonly found in traditional dental 3D printing workflows.

Step 4: Delivery

The dentist inspects the restoration and checks marginal fit, internal seating, proximal contact, and occlusion. The crown or other restoration is then finished and cemented or bonded according to the relevant cement instructions.

A suitable single-crown case can move from intraoral scanning to delivery in under 30 minutes.

Benefits for Dental Clinics

Compared to common dental 3D printers, the advantages of the Ceramix-Nano 3D printed capsule machine are as follows:

  • Same-day restoration: Fast intraoral scanning, AI crown design, and capsule 3D printing shorten the treatment cycle, allowing patients to leave with their permanent restoration on the same day.

  • Faster Dental Restorations: With the Ceramix-Nano, 3D printing dental crowns can be completed in approximately 15 minutes, with 8-11 minutes of print time and 3 minutes for curing. Using the SHINING Flow platform, the entire workflow from intraoral scanning to final restoration can be completed in just 30 minutes, significantly boosting clinic efficiency.

  • Support On-site Treatment: Ceramix-Nano weighs only 2 kg and can be powered by a 10,000mAh+ portable power bank. This makes the entire printer portable, enabling on-site care.

  • High Quality with High-level Aesthetics: Ceramix-Nano provides 50μm XY resolution, controlled APS separation, validated curing, and a permanent crown resin containing 55% ceramic filler. LumiCera is supplied in five VITA shades, while the optional oxygen-free curing module supports a smoother surface.

  • Simplified Workflow: The capsule system removes several open-vat printing steps. Operators do not need to pour resin or level the platform before every job. Scanning, cloud design, printing, and curing are connected within the same workflow.
